Old-Time Religion, It’s Good Enough For Paul & Silas, It’s Good Enough For Me

Editors note:  My Father sent me his Bible last year.  He said he wanted me to have it.  I unwrapped it and carefully placed it on the shelf, as this was precious to me.  Today while talking and searching with a dear sister I went to this Bible as it was a Dakes and I wanted to see what the commentator had to say about a passage of Jeremiah, when I opened it and something fell out of the pages.  Something I had not seen until today.  It was sermon notes of my Father.  It was titled “The Old-Time Relgion.”  This is his message and I write this for him.  Now he is with our Lord.  I can feel him smiling and nodding his head.

Jude 3:

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the Saints.

There are three kinds of preachers in the world today.
First, there is the modernist. He does not believe all of God’s word, he has no use for the cardinal doctrines of our faith.

He despises the Old-Time Religion.

Then there is the “middle of the road” preacher. He tries to please everybody. To him everyone is good, no one is really lost.

Then there is the preacher who is true to the word. He knows men are lost and that Christ is their only hope.

There is a spiritual death in the land today.

Millions are lost in sin. They completely ignore the church. God has no place in their lives.

Millions have their names on church rolls, yet they’re membership means nothing to them.

Preachers of our day are failing to preach the Old-Time-Religion.

Jude admonishes us to contend earnestly for the faith which was once delivered to the Saints. The message is not a new one!

It is the same message which Peter proclaimed on the day of Pentecost. A message which turned 3,000 souls to Christ.

It is the same message that Stephen proclaimed, which cut his hearers to the heart. They Stoned Him to death for this message.

It is the same message, which Paul proclaimed before Kings and Jailers. He said:
“I am not ashamed of the Gospel Christ: for it is the power of God unto Salvation to everyone that believes.”  Romans 1:16

What are the Basic Beliefs of the Old-Time Religion?
1. A Great and Awesome God
2. A Great Creation
3. A Great Saviour
His Virgin Birth
His Death
His Resurrection
It includes the belief in the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.  It includes the belief that Jesus is the Son Of God, and there is only one way to the Father, through Him.

It includes the belief in the Bible as God’s word to man.
2Peter 1:21 “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

“God’s Holy Word. Today they want to change it.

It includes the belief that sin is sin. It includes the belief of Hell. It includes the belief that man must be born again. It includes the belief in Heaven. It includes the belief that Jesus is soon coming.

It is still powerful, it transforms lives. It has the power to save the vilest sinner.  It is powerful in helping men to die. Our Mothers and Fathers came down to the end of the way with Glory in their faces and victory in their hearts.

Is there a substitute for the Old-Time-Religion? “NO” NEVER.

Conscience is not a substitute. Some people say let your conscience be your guide. But the Bible say’s there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.  Proverbs 14:12

Sincerity is not a substitute. You can be sincere in your beliefs, and be sincerely wrong.

A good moral life is not enough, if you don’t believe in God.  There is only one way to Heaven.   Only the Old-Time-Religion is sufficient.

God is not willing that any should perish. You must repent, confess your sins, and believe in Christ.

Gimme that old time religion, it was good for the Hebrew children, it’s good enough for me.  Gimme that old time religion, it was good for Dad and Mother, it’s good enough for me.  It will do when I am dyin’ it’s good enough for me.

  1. Truly a post of great teaching like John the baptist preached among hundreds before our saviour came to free us of our sin! That fire and brimestone message is so needful today, but the soft God is love and hates nothing sells better even though scripture gives us the full message of love and hate! (Proverbs 6:16-19),(Psalm 97:9,10).What a blessing to of had a dad so on fire for the truth of the word of God.May you be blessed for sharing Dear Sister in Christ.

  2. Beautiful sermon notes, CJ. Brought tears to my eyes and remembrance of the great sermons preached every week by the great preachers of my youth and younger years. This is what it’s all about and what is needed to bring people to Christ. God bless you, CJ.

    • Amen and thank you. Yes I really never thought I would ever see the lukewarm church of today. We stand together in truth. I promised my father I would carry on, the day he passed, and I promised my Heavenly Father as long as he gave me strength I would spread His word. All here stand for the truth of God’s word. Thanks so much.
