The scribes and pharisees were looked upon by Jesus as blind guides and hypocrites. They were far from being holy and teachers of truth. Jesus did not hold back in telling them although they appeared all beautiful on the outside that they were as whited sepulchres full of dead mens bones and all corruption(Matthew 23:23-29). Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
The world is big on the outward appearance as it shows the status of one’s life such as expensive cars, luxurious homes and huge bank accounts. Is this in Gods eyes what shows Him we are Christians serving Him? Does God look at all we have or at all we are? Is the outward appearance just as important as what lies within us?(1 Samuel 16:7), But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. (1 Peter 3:1-4).
Now that we know God searches our hearts, will He find our hearts set on Him or things of the world?
