There is power in the words we speak for some can lift up and edify while others may tear down and destroy! Scripture teaches that when we speak it is more than mere words, but there is emotion as well and words reveal the heart of a person (Luke 6:45). A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Our words say a lot about who we truly are. For instance did you know those who lie hate those that are afflicted by it? (Proverbs 26:28).If we study the word of God and speak it we can be sure they are words that edify others. Peter knew the words Jesus spoke were able to give eternal life to all who believe (John 6:64-69). But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
Will we give account for any words spoken? Scripture teaches we will be justified or condemned by them (Matthew 12:34-37). O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
The next time we think words have no power may we be reminded of the wise words of (Proverbs 18:21). Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
