How to tell Wheat from Tares

From time to time I touch on subjects that are controversial in nature, and ruffle feathers.  But I feel led by the Holy Spirit, and this is one of those times.  There are many new church’s today that got their start in the 1960’s, some got their start more recently.  There are many, many evangelical ministers on TV today.  Some are wheat, and others are tares.

2Timothy 4:3 tells us, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  4.)  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

we’ll get to wheat and tares in a minute, but I want to expand on the above briefly.  Rick Warren say’s that his book the Purpose driven life is the best selling book, second only to the Bible, and translated in as many languages as the Bible.  This statement set me to thinking that he is placing himself beside God at the very least, and placing himself above God at the worst.  What is sad is that alot of Christians are flocking to this, because he has just enough truth in it to make them think it sounds good, and it did come from God.

The prosperity gospel is one of the most preached doctrines today.  Prosperity evangelists tout this gospel like it’s a new chapter of the Bible that was just discovered.   At first glance of their books and messages they  are fantastic, and you want to shout Hallelujah!  But it’s not that simple.  In one book “Battlefield of the Mind”   scripture  sounds amazing.  But the emphasis, if you look deeper into the book, is not on what God can do to heal your mind and spirit, but what YOU can do to help God out.  It’s a very little “Tare”  but if left unattended will grow into a huge field of tares.  These ministries are based on  the principle that if you just learn how to think God will Bless you, and if you Give, and Give, until it hurts, God will give you rich’s untold.  So, if these evangelists are actually preaching and teaching like the disciples why is it that WE have to give everything to them, in order to be blessed by God.  Now don’t get me wrong, I fully support the biblical view that  a church community is to help provide for the teachers and the community, but this idea of giving everything to a man or woman of God so that we in return will be blessed is wrong.  They twist this verse so often, that when they use it, it’s almost unrecognizable  1Thessalonians 5:9 ” For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Oh yeah you say that’s it, God didn’t want us to suffer.  Well read the next verse and you’ll see what Paul was talking about.  10.)  He died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.  11.)  Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”  Ok, there you have it!  God’s definition of suffering is different from that of Prosperity Gospel Evangelists.  God’s definition of suffering is dying in your sins and spending eternity without him, NOT THEIR BRAND OF SUFFERING.

God doesn’t promise us a life free from tribulation.  In fact in some of the last instructions Jesus gave to his disciples in John He told them “you won’t have suffering because of me?”  NO, NO, He told them this:  John 16:33  “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have TROUBLE, but take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

Well that say’s it  all, but they won’t teach that.  God promises to be with us through our trials, and sufferings, not take us from them.  If you can learn to trust in His Will, not ours, and learn to praise Him through it all, He will deliver you.  When Peter was about to drown  and was sinking fast, He didn’t wave a magic wand and make him magically appear back in the boat.  No, he took his hand & guided him back into the boat, and admonished him with:  “You of little faith, why did you doubt”  In other words, you should have known that you could’ve handled that, but since you doubted, I’ll help you.  So we can learn a huge lesson from this, know that the Holy Spirit is always there with you, we don’t have to fear or doubt, just know that he’s there and will lift us up out of the water if we get in too deep.

Ok, Jesus tells a parable in Mathew chapter 13 about the Kingdom of Heaven.  “The Kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  but while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.  When the wheat sprouted, and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.  The owner’s servants came to him and said, Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field?  Where then did the weeds come from?  An enemy did this, he replied.  They wanted to go and pull them up but the owner said No, because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest.  At that time I will tell the harvesters:  First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it to my barn.”

Too confusing you say?  Well Jesus explains it in verse 37.  The one who sowed good seed is the Son of Man.  The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom.  The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil.  The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are the angels.  As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.  The Son of Man, will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom and everything that causes sin and all who do evil.  They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.  He who has ears, let him hear.”

So how does this fit in?  Well the word that I got is this;  All these prosperity preachers, and all the preachers of worship without acknowledgment or repentance are idol worshipers.  That’s right, they are not worshiping God, they are :  “Lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-having a form of godliness but denying it’s power.” (2Timothy chapter 3)  By the way this is Paul’s description of the type of people for the endtimes.

So before you give all your money to prosperity preachers consider this.  Jesus did not say sell everything you have and give it to Peter and I’ll bless you with richs untold.  He said give to the poor, the widows and the fatherless.  So give to your church or better yet, pick someone out of your community who is struggling and give to them!  And then you will be doing God’s work.  And above all don’t boast about it.  So God Bless and guide you in your search for the truth, you now know how to discern wheat from tares, and if your still confused, pray about it and ask for the Holy Spirit to guide you into truth, He will.
